How well do you sit?

Did you know ‘Sitting’ is now considered the New Smoking!! Our modern lifestyle keeps us immobile for long periods of the day yet we’re designed to move. We’ve engineered movement out of our lives to the point that it is now a necessity to prescribe or supplement movement back into our lives (the same reason why you should be working out daily!). Our body’s simply haven’t caught up with our rapidly changing modern lifestyle. Just like any organism, our body’s have certain requirements for health. If we meets these requirements – we thrive and move towards health, if we don’t – we move towards ill health. Movement is one of those requirements.

Here’s some simple advice to adhere to for when you have to sit.  A good rule of thumb is to take regular micro breaks every 30 mins if you are sitting for any extended amount of time. A micro break is simply a change in your position from sitting to standing and moving around. So just get up, move around – a good habit would be to twist the spine left and right and then lean to the left and right while facing forward. This forces the spine to move and counteracts the immobility of the spine while sitting.

In addition to these healthy habits you will need to take a look at the ergonomics of your desk, car etc – A future Vlog will cover these.

Health for Life  is a fortnightly Vlog where I share my favorite tips and strategies to improve your health and the health of your family.  Whether you’re struggling with a current health problem, or you are simply looking to squeeze more out of life, we’ve got answers for you!
